The CASABREWS MARENZA is a semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in conical burr grinder and a manual steam wand. It takes you from whole beans to a latte, cappuccino or flat white on one machine, with a display that shows what is happening during each shot. Here is what its specifications mean in practice.

How a semi-automatic machine works

On a semi-automatic machine, you do the barista steps yourself: grind, dose the coffee into the portafilter, tamp it level, lock it in and start the shot. The machine handles water temperature and pressure. On the MARENZA, a dial selects steam, hot water, and pre-programmed single or double shots, so the main skills to learn are grinding and tamping.

It is more hands-on than a pod or fully automatic machine, and that is the point: you can adjust each variable until the shot tastes the way you like it.

The built-in conical burr grinder

Burr grinders crush beans between two hard surfaces set a fixed distance apart, which produces a far more even grind than a blade grinder. In a conical design, a cone-shaped burr turns inside a ring. The MARENZA grinds fresh coffee on demand, straight into the portafilter, with 30 grind settings.

Grind size is the main control in espresso. Finer grounds slow the water down and give a stronger, more intense shot; coarser grounds let it run faster and lighter. CASABREWS suggests starting at setting 10 and adjusting from there. The brand also advises cleaning the grinder every 18 to 25 days, since coffee oils and fine particles build up over time.

Pressure, power and the 58mm basket

A 20-bar Italian pump and a 1450W system handle grinding and extraction. A 20-bar figure describes the pump's maximum; espresso itself is typically brewed at around 9 bar. What helps most is seeing the pressure, and the LCD display tracks both brew time and real-time pressure, so you can tell whether a shot is running too fast or too slow and change the grind to suit.

The filter basket is 58mm, the size used by most commercial machines, so tampers and other accessories in this size are widely available. CASABREWS includes a simple dose guide: after tamping, the dose is right when the tamper's metal rim sits flush with the edge of the basket.

Steam wand and milk drinks

The 10mm manual steam wand textures milk into microfoam: a glossy, fine-bubbled foam that pours smoothly and holds the shapes used in latte art. A manual wand takes some practice compared with an automatic frother, but it gives you control over temperature and texture for different drinks.

Water tank, materials and size

The 57oz (about 1.7-litre) water tank is clear, so you can see the level, and comes off for refilling at the sink. CASABREWS says the complete water circuit is PFAS-free. PFAS are a large family of synthetic fluorinated chemicals used in some non-stick coatings, seals and tubing.

The machine has a brushed stainless steel finish and measures about 15.06 inches tall, 8.9 inches wide and 11.81 inches deep (roughly 38 x 23 x 30 cm). It suits a home kitchen or an office where people want espresso drinks made from fresh beans.

What to check before you buy

  • Height under cabinets: at about 15 inches tall, check the clearance, including room to add beans to the grinder and lift out the tank.
  • Learning curve: semi-automatic espresso takes some practice with grind size and tamping; expect a few adjustments with each new bag of beans.
  • Cleaning routine: allow time for daily wand and portafilter cleaning, plus the grinder cleaning CASABREWS advises.
  • Accessories: check the manual for what is included, such as a tamper, milk jug and baskets.
  • Beans: freshly roasted whole beans suit a built-in grinder; pre-ground coffee skips its main advantage.

The short version

  • A semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in conical burr grinder and 30 grind settings.
  • 20-bar Italian pump and 1450W system, with an LCD that shows brew time and real-time pressure.
  • 58mm filter basket with a simple flush-rim dose check.
  • 10mm manual steam wand for microfoam, and a clear 57oz removable tank.
  • CASABREWS says the water circuit is PFAS-free.
