The CASABREWS CM5418-US is a small semi-automatic espresso machine with a steam wand, aimed at home and office use. It lets you pull single or double shots and texture milk for lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and flat whites, in a stainless steel body that CASABREWS says fits kitchens of any size.

How semi-automatic espresso works

You do the hands-on steps: grind and dose the coffee, tamp it, lock the portafilter in and start the shot. The machine supplies heat and pump pressure. This gives more control over taste than capsules, though it takes some practice. No grinder comes with it, so you will need ground coffee.

20 bar pump and 1350W boiler

The listing describes a 20-bar Italian pump and a 1350W boiler. Bar measures pressure. Traditional espresso is typically brewed at about 9 bar at the coffee, so the 20 bar figure is best read as the pump's maximum capability. CASABREWS says the system produces top-quality extraction with a fragrant, rich aroma and a layer of crema.

A built-in pressure gauge displays the pressure while brewing. The brand says it lets you adjust to your preferences, and it can help you see the effect of changing grind or tamp.

The steam wand

The steam wand is for creating microfoam, the smooth, glossy milk used in lattes and for latte art. CASABREWS suggests you can practise milk foam art with it. A steam wand takes practice, and milk jugs and thermometers are not included.

The maker gives a clear warning: do not brew coffee right after frothing milk. Let the machine cool first. If it overheats, it goes into protection mode and the 1-cup and 2-cup lights flash repeatedly. The included guide explains how to cool it.

Size, tank and accessories

The machine measures 12.3 x 5.5 x 12.0 inches (about 31 x 14 x 30 cm) and weighs 8.6 lb (about 3.9 kg). The 34 oz (about 1 litre) tank is detachable, so it is easy to fill at the sink. The listed contents are:

  • the espresso machine
  • the 34 oz removable water tank
  • one-cup and two-cup filters
  • a portafilter
  • a tamper with spoon
  • an instruction manual

CASABREWS states it is a US-based company and provides a one-year warranty.

Who it suits

It suits people starting out with espresso, small kitchens and shared offices. It is a manual-style machine, so if you want one-touch drinks, a fully automatic model is a different category.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter fit: measure for width, depth and the height needed to lift the tank.
  • Coffee supply: plan for a grinder or freshly ground coffee.
  • Cup size: check that your cups fit under the portafilter.
  • After steaming: allow the cool-down the manual describes.
  • Upkeep: read the descaling and cleaning instructions.
  • Power: confirm your outlet suits a 1350W appliance.
