The Antarctic Star inverter portable air conditioner is a 12,000 BTU unit (8,000 BTU SACC) on castors, for cooling a room where a window unit or central air isn't practical. It combines an inverter compressor with a self-evaporating drain system, four modes and a 24-hour timer. Here is what its specs mean and what to check before setting it up.
12,000 BTU, 8,000 BTU SACC and 550 sq ft
Portable air conditioners are often listed with two cooling figures. The higher one, 12,000 BTU here, comes from an older test. The lower one, 8,000 BTU SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity), comes from the US Department of Energy's newer test for portable units, which allows for heat that the hose and casing let back into the room and for hot outdoor conditions. SACC is typically the closer guide to what you'll feel.
Antarctic Star lists the unit for spaces up to 550 sq ft (about 51 m²). Real coverage depends on insulation, sun, ceiling height and how many people use the room, so compare the SACC figure with sizing guidance for your space. The pictures show a single exhaust hose; with single-hose units, some warm outside air is drawn back in through gaps as the unit exhausts room air, which is another reason to allow some margin.
What the inverter changes
A conventional compressor runs at full speed, then switches off and on again to hold the temperature. An inverter compressor adjusts its speed instead, which typically keeps the room temperature steadier and avoids the noise of frequent restarts. Antarctic Star gives a CEER (Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio) of up to 10; CEER compares cooling output with power use, and higher means more efficient.
The pictures give a maximum airflow of 380 cubic metres per hour (about 224 cubic feet per minute). The air outlet opens up to 95 degrees, and its direction adjusts vertically.
Modes and controls
There are four modes: cool, dry, fan and sleep, with three fan speeds. In dry mode it removes up to 60 pints of moisture a day (about 28 litres). A one-touch strong cooling mode locks the temperature at 60.8°F (16°C), and sleep mode runs more quietly, at 45 dB according to the listing.
Settings are made on the top-mounted LED display or the remote; the picture gives the remote a range of 17 ft (about 5 m). A 24-hour timer switches the unit on or off on schedule, and the panel has a child lock. Auto defrost helps prevent frost building up on the evaporator; frost can form when the coil runs very cold, and it blocks airflow.
Draining and self-evaporation
Every air conditioner pulls moisture out of the air. Here, a self-evaporating system recycles the condensation and sends it out with the hot exhaust air, so the unit can run for up to 72 hours without draining. If the internal tank does fill, the unit shuts off automatically to prevent overflow. Antarctic Star's picture also recommends connecting a drain hose in cooling or dry mode, so it is worth planning a drain route.
Size and setup
The unit measures about 14.2 x 15.7 x 28.7 inches (36 x 40 x 73 cm) and weighs 52.4 lb (about 24 kg). Castors that turn 360 degrees let it roll between rooms. The window kit is shown in vertical and horizontal sliding windows from 25.59 to 49.21 inches (65 to 125 cm) wide or tall.
Who it suits
It suits bedrooms, living rooms, apartments, offices and garages, for people who want a dry mode, a timer and fewer trips to empty water.
What to check before you buy
- Room size: compare the 8,000 BTU SACC figure with your room.
- Window: confirm your window type and that it falls within 25.59-49.21 inches.
- Drainage: plan where a drain hose would run, and check what's in the box.
- Space and weight: allow floor space near the window and remember it weighs over 50 lb.
- Power: follow the manual's guidance on outlets and extension cords.
