The AMZCHEF CM1861 is a compact semi-automatic espresso machine with a steam wand for milk. It is aimed at people who want to make espresso, cappuccino and latte at home without a large countertop footprint. Here is what its features mean and who it may suit.

What 20 bar means

Espresso is made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure. The CM1861 is rated at 20 bar. In general, a pump's maximum figure is higher than the pressure at the coffee itself, since espresso is traditionally extracted at around 9 bar. AMZCHEF says the machine also runs a 6-second pre-infusion, which wets the grounds gently before full pressure is applied. That step typically helps the water flow more evenly through the coffee puck.

Heating and temperature control

A 1350W heating system lets the machine preheat in about 30 seconds, according to AMZCHEF. Temperature is managed with NTC technology, a type of temperature sensor, and there are three heat settings up to 201°F (about 94°C). Having a choice is useful because different roasts often taste better at slightly different temperatures: lighter roasts usually like it hotter, darker ones cooler.

Steam wand and touch panel

The 360° steam wand swivels so you can position the milk jug comfortably. Frothing milk takes practice, and results depend on the milk, the jug and your technique. The HD touch panel controls the shots, and AMZCHEF says it has volume memory, so the machine repeats the amount you set for the next cup.

Build, tank and safety

The body is stainless steel. The removable 44 oz (about 1.3 L) water tank lifts out for filling and cleaning. A built-in auto-off function switches the machine off after 15 minutes. The machine measures about 12.1 × 13.0 × 6.5 inches (31 × 33 × 17 cm) and weighs 8.5 lb (about 3.9 kg), small enough for most counters.

Who it suits

A semi-automatic machine like this one needs you to grind, dose and tamp the coffee yourself. It fits people who enjoy learning the process and want milk drinks. If you want to press one button and get a coffee with no preparation, a different type of machine may suit you better.

What to check before you buy

  • Grinder: you will usually need a separate grinder for fresh, fine espresso grounds.
  • Counter space and height: check the clearance under your cabinets for filling the tank and moving the wand.
  • What's in the box: confirm which portafilter baskets, tamper and accessories are included.
  • Upkeep: plan for descaling and for cleaning the steam wand after each use.
  • Power: a 1350W appliance should be used on a properly rated outlet; follow the manual.
