The XTOOL IP616 is an OBD2 diagnostic scan tool for car owners and DIY mechanics. It goes beyond a basic code reader: it can scan the vehicle's control modules, show live data, and run more than 31 service and reset functions. It plugs into the car's diagnostic port and is operated from a touchscreen.

What a full-system scan covers

A basic code reader looks only at the engine. XTOOL says the IP616 can scan every control unit (ECU) on most vehicles, including the engine and powertrain modules, power steering, body control, tyre pressure monitoring, steering angle sensor and air conditioning, with one click. It reads and clears diagnostic trouble codes, shows live data, retrieves freeze-frame data and reads ECU information.

The 31+ special functions

A "special function" menu holds maintenance procedures that normally need a workshop tool. XTOOL lists oil reset, ABS bleeding, electronic parking brake (EPB) reset, battery management (BMS) reset, high-voltage battery diagnostics, power balance, steering angle sensor (SAS) calibration, A/C relearn, TPMS reset and throttle adjustment, among others. Coverage depends on make, model and year, so check compatibility for your vehicle before relying on a particular function.

Live data and reports

You can graph up to 8 live data streams on one chart or view them as separate graphs. Seeing sensor values over time is a common way to spot a fault that a single reading misses. The 2024 version also has customisable diagnostic reports that can be set up for email and printing.

CAN FD and CAN fast scan

CAN FD is a newer, faster vehicle communication protocol. XTOOL says the tool supports it without extra adapters and names GM models from 2020 onward. A "CAN fast scan 2.0" feature is listed as doubling the speed of diagnosis on vehicles that use CAN.

What it doesn't do

The listing states plainly that the tool has no active tests and no bidirectional control. That means it reads and resets, but it can't command components such as a fan or pump to run. Buyers who need that should look for a tool that lists bidirectional control.

Coverage and updates

XTOOL lists coverage of more than 10,000 vehicles from American, European, Asian and other makers, with 14 languages. The tool comes with lifetime software updates, and the description adds that you keep the features of your last update even if you don't renew a subscription after three years. There is also a vehicle customisation feature, which XTOOL says can switch some features on or off, subject to compatibility.

Who it suits

It suits home mechanics who want to do their own oil resets, brake bleeds and code diagnosis, and small-garage users who want reset functions without a bidirectional tool.

What to check before you buy

  • Your vehicle: confirm make, model and year coverage for the functions you want.
  • Bidirectional needs: it has no active tests.
  • Update terms: read how updates and any subscription work.
  • Procedures: follow the vehicle maker's service instructions and the tool's manual for resets, brake bleeding and the like.
  • Port access: check where the OBD2 port is in your car.
