The XTOOL D8S is a tablet-style automotive scan tool that reads fault codes, shows live data and can send commands to a vehicle's control units. It is an upgraded version of the XTOOL D8 and is aimed at home mechanics and workshops that want more than a basic code reader. Here is what its main features mean and what to confirm for your own vehicle.
Bidirectional control, explained
A basic code reader only listens to the car. A bidirectional tool can also send commands, so you can switch a component on or off and see how the car responds. XTOOL lists active tests such as injector tests, fuel injector balance, a compression test, cooling fan, A/C clutch on/off, ABS motor pump, and windows, wipers, sunroof and doors. These tests help narrow down whether a fault lies in a part or in its wiring and controls. XTOOL notes that available tests vary by vehicle and that older vehicles tend to have fewer.
All-system diagnostics and live data
The D8S can scan systems beyond the engine, including transmission, ABS, airbag, brake, body, chassis, HVAC and radio. XTOOL says you can read and clear codes, view freeze-frame and ECU information, and graph up to eight live data values (PIDs) at once, such as fuel trims, oxygen sensors and wheel-speed sensors. Data can be exported as CSV, and the tool offers pre- and post-scan reports.
Service functions and coding
XTOOL lists more than 38 special functions, including oil reset, electronic parking brake, steering angle sensor, battery management, throttle, injector coding, ABS bleed, TPMS reset, headlight and idle relearn. It also lists ECU coding for Audi, VW and Skoda, hidden-function activation on a range of brands, and PMI for Ford, Lincoln and Mazda to copy data after a module is replaced. The brand notes that these services don't work on every car, and suggests checking compatibility with your VIN first.
Topology mapping, CAN FD and DoIP
Topology mapping shows the vehicle's control modules and how they connect, which is a quick way to see which module isn't responding. CAN FD is a faster communication protocol, which XTOOL lists for GM vehicles from 2020. DoIP (diagnostics over internet protocol) is listed for BMW E/F/G chassis, Jaguar and Land Rover. Both matter mostly on newer vehicles.
Hardware
XTOOL describes an Android 10 tablet with 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, a quad-core 1.8 GHz processor, dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and a fast-charging battery. The listing gives the battery as 5000 mAh in one place and 10000 mAh in another, so confirm the figure before relying on it. The description also mentions a built-in camera and compatibility with an XV100 endoscope. Dimensions are about 10.8 x 1.3 x 6.9 inches (27 x 3 x 18 cm).
Updates and languages
The tool comes with three years of software updates, which add vehicle coverage and features. English and Spanish are pre-installed, and more than 14 languages are supported, with the change handled through the brand using the serial number.
Who it suits
It suits enthusiasts who work on their own vehicles, small repair shops and anyone who regularly needs service resets, coding or active tests. People who only need to read and clear a check-engine code may not need this level of tool.
What to check before you buy
- Vehicle coverage: confirm your make, model, year and the specific functions you need, using your VIN with the brand.
- Vehicle voltage and type: XTOOL describes coverage for 12V cars, light trucks, SUVs, mini vans and hybrids.
- Coding risks: coding and hidden functions can change how a vehicle behaves. Follow the manual and record original settings first.
- Update period: note what happens when the three years of updates end.
- Language: check how to switch from the default English if needed.
