The XTOOL D7S is a tablet-style automotive diagnostic scanner, billed as an upgrade to the XTOOL D7. It goes beyond a basic code reader: XTOOL says it reads all vehicle systems, runs two-way tests, performs maintenance resets and offers ECU coding. Here is what those terms mean and what to confirm for your own vehicle.
All-system diagnostics
A basic OBD2 reader looks at engine and emissions codes. The D7S is described as performing OE-level diagnosis on all available systems, which means it can read ECU information, freeze-frame data and live data from systems such as ABS, airbags and transmission, not just the engine. Freeze-frame data is a snapshot of conditions at the moment a fault was recorded, which can help in tracking it down.
What bidirectional control means
On a bidirectional tool, the scanner doesn't only listen. It also sends commands to components so you can test them, for example the A/C clutch, ABS pump, fuel pump, cooling fan, injectors or horn. XTOOL cites more than 4,000 active tests, though it notes that the menus available vary by vehicle. These tests can help separate a faulty part from a wiring or software issue.
Service functions and coding
XTOOL lists 36 or more maintenance services, such as oil reset, ABS bleed, electronic parking brake, steering angle sensor, throttle and injector coding. It adds vehicle-specific functions like power balance, ABS initialisation, crankshaft relearn, fuel trim reset and SWS initialisation. It also supports ECU coding. Functions vary by vehicle, so check coverage for your model.
Live data graphing
Live data can be graphed, with up to eight data streams (PIDs) combined in one chart or shown as eight separate graphs on one screen. Seeing trends over time is usually more informative than a list of numbers. The D7S also supports data playback and recording. An Auto Scan feature detects the VIN automatically to speed up the start of a session, though XTOOL says it doesn't work on all vehicles.
Newer vehicles, storage and software
The D7S supports the DoIP and CAN FD protocols found on many newer vehicles, and XTOOL says no adapters are needed for these. It lists coverage of more than 10,000 vehicles from American, Asian, European, Australian and Chinese brands, with coverage growing through updates. It also lists 2 GB of memory plus 64 GB of storage, a larger battery and compatibility with the XV100 endoscope. The interface supports more than 15 languages, including English and Spanish.
Updates and reports
XTOOL includes three years of software updates from the day of activation, and says the tool remains fully functional without a subscription afterwards. Updates bring new features and added vehicle coverage. A second-generation Diagnostic Report lets workshops add a logo and client details, choose what the report contains, edit titles, add notes and share reports by email.
Size
The tool measures about 12.6 x 11.3 x 4.1 inches (roughly 32 x 29 x 10 cm), which is its size in the supplied packaging.
Who it suits
XTOOL positions it for professionals, workshops, garages and keen DIYers. It suits people who want to go beyond reading codes, such as doing their own service resets or testing components, and small shops that want printable reports for customers.
What to check before you buy
- Vehicle coverage: XTOOL itself advises checking compatibility for your make, model and year before buying.
- Functions you need: specific resets, coding and active tests vary by vehicle.
- Updates: note the three-year update period and how activation works.
- Skill level: coding and two-way controls can change vehicle settings, so follow the manual and manufacturer procedures.
- Connection: check where your vehicle's diagnostic port is and which cable or adapter, if any, it needs.
- Battery health: many resets and coding jobs are best done with a healthy battery or a power supply connected.
