The XTOOL Anyscan A30D is a small Bluetooth diagnostic adapter that plugs into a car's OBD2 port and works with an app on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone. It reads fault codes, shows live data and offers a set of bi-directional controls and service resets. It is aimed at home mechanics who want more than a basic code reader.

What an OBD2 scanner does

Most cars sold in recent decades have a standard OBD2 port, usually under the dashboard. A basic reader pulls trouble codes from the engine computer and clears them. The A30D goes further: XTOOL lists reading and clearing codes, live data graphs, freeze frame data and ECU information, across modules such as PCM, ECM, EPS, PDM, TPM, BCM, ABS and SCCM. Coverage varies by vehicle make, model and year, so check compatibility for your own car.

What bi-directional control means

A standard reader only listens. A bi-directional tool can also send commands, so you can switch a component on and off to see whether it responds. XTOOL says the A30D's active tests can control items such as the fuel pump, valves, wipers, windows, doors, sunroof and headlamps. That helps tell a faulty part from a wiring or control problem. Which tests are available depends on the vehicle.

The 14 service functions

XTOOL lists these services:

  • ABS bleeding, oil reset, injector coding and throttle relearn
  • Airbag repair, TPMS reset, BMS reset and EPB reset
  • DPF reset, SAS reset, gear learning and transmission matching
  • Tire upgrade and seat calibration

The listing stresses that these are not available on all vehicles. ABS auto-bleed in particular only works where the manufacturer's programming supports it, so confirm that before relying on it. Brake work affects safety, so follow the vehicle's service manual and have a qualified technician check anything you're unsure about.

Setting it up

The steps given are:

  1. Download the Anyscan app for iOS or Android (for Android, XTOOL says to use the newest app from its official website).
  2. Bind and activate the dongle in the app, using the serial number and activation code on the quality certificate.
  3. Plug the adapter into the OBD2 port.
  4. Pair it over Bluetooth in your phone's settings.
  5. Turn the ignition on and start the diagnosis.

Updates and connection

XTOOL offers lifetime software updates and a 30-day replacement period. Because the link is Bluetooth, there is no cable running from the dash to a handheld screen, and you can move around the car while it runs.

Who it suits

It suits DIY owners who do their own maintenance, such as oil resets, brake bleeding and tyre-sensor resets, and who are happy to work from a phone. It's less relevant for professionals who need deep coverage across many makes, or for owners who only need to read a warning light occasionally.

What to check before you buy

  • Vehicle coverage: check that your make, model and year support the functions you need.
  • Phone compatibility: confirm your phone or tablet's operating system version works with the app.
  • Port location: make sure you can reach the OBD2 port and that the adapter fits.
  • Activation: keep the quality certificate, as the serial number and code are needed to activate it.
  • Safety: reset only systems you understand, and follow the manual for your car.

The short version

  • A Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and app for iOS and Android.
  • Reads and clears codes, shows live data and freeze frames.
  • Bi-directional active tests and 14 service functions, depending on the vehicle.
  • Lifetime software updates and a 30-day replacement period, per XTOOL.
  • Not every function works on every car, so check compatibility first.
