The XTOOL Advancer AD20 Pro is a small wireless OBD2 adapter. It plugs into the car's diagnostic port and sends data by Bluetooth to a phone app, so the phone becomes the display. It is meant for car owners and home mechanics who want to read fault codes and watch live data without a bulky handheld tool.
How the adapter and app work
The adapter is about 4.1 x 1.1 x 2.7 inches (roughly 10.4 x 2.8 x 6.9 cm). You install XTOOL's own "Advancer AD20" app on an iPhone or Android phone, pair it and connect. The app lets you set up a customised dashboard so the readings you care about are in front of you. A smart dash function can show engine information as a digital dashboard on the phone.
XTOOL says the app has no subscription fee. If you move the adapter to a different vehicle, the brand explains you unpair it in the app settings and enter the new car's details.
Reading and clearing codes
XTOOL lists the full set of generic OBD2 tests: reading and clearing codes, live data stream, freeze frame, ECU information, component test, on-board monitor tests (OBD2 mode 6), O2 sensor test, I/M readiness and vehicle information. Live data includes values such as engine load, RPM, fuel trims, MAF, O2 sensors, misfire counters and voltage.
Clearing the check engine light is only sensible once the underlying fault has been fixed, otherwise it will come back. The I/M readiness status helps you see whether the car's monitors are ready before an emissions inspection.
All system scan and oil reset
Beyond engine data, the brand says the AD20 Pro scans other systems, including powertrain, steering and brake, airbag, ABS and TPMS, to read and clear fault codes. XTOOL notes this is reading and clearing codes, not resetting systems. The adapter also has an oil light reset function; XTOOL asks buyers to send their VIN to check compatibility first.
Performance tests and trip analysis
A performance test can measure 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time, maximum speed, engine load and coolant temperature. Trip analysis records figures such as average speed and average fuel consumption, which XTOOL says helps you monitor performance and adjust driving habits. Take performance tests only where it is legal and safe to do so.
Compatibility
XTOOL says the AD20 Pro works with OBDII-compliant vehicles that use 12 volts: American cars from 1996, European from 2000 and Asian from 2008 sold in the US. It covers the main OBDII protocols (J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, ISO9141-2, KWP2000 and SAE J2480) and gasoline and hybrid vehicles. The brand states it is not for pure electric vehicles. The app supports 11 languages.
Who it suits
It suits people who are comfortable using a phone app and want a compact tool to check codes, see live data or monitor trips. It will not replace a qualified mechanic for complex repairs.
What to check before you buy
- Your phone: confirm the app is available for your iPhone or Android version.
- Your vehicle: check its model year and that it is not a pure EV.
- Oil reset: the brand recommends checking VIN compatibility first.
- Systems covered: reading and clearing codes on other systems is not the same as a full reset or service function.
- Following the manual: use the adapter as the instructions describe and don't run apps that distract the driver.
The short version
- A Bluetooth OBD2 adapter with the Advancer AD20 phone app.
- Full OBDII tests, all system code reading and clearing, and oil light reset.
- Performance tests, trip analysis and a customisable dashboard.
- Lifetime app access with no subscription fee, per XTOOL.
- For 12V gasoline and hybrid vehicles, not pure EVs.
