The XTOOL AD20 Pro is a wireless OBD2 scanner: a small adapter that plugs into the diagnostic port of a car and talks to an app on a phone or tablet. It is meant for drivers who want to find out why the check engine light is on, and for home mechanics who want live engine data without a bulky handheld tool.
What an OBD2 scanner actually does
Cars sold in North America since 1996 have a standard OBD-II port, usually under the dashboard on the driver's side. The car's computer stores diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) there when it detects a fault. A scanner reads those codes, lets you clear them, and shows the data the computer is working with. XTOOL says the AD20 Pro covers the full set of OBD2 test modes, including freeze frame data (a snapshot of conditions when a fault was logged), I/M readiness status, ECU information, oxygen sensor tests and the on-board monitor test results.
Beyond the engine: all-system scanning
A basic code reader looks only at the engine and emissions systems. XTOOL says the AD20 Pro also performs an all-system scan, reaching modules such as the engine, powertrain, steering and brake, airbag and ABS, and that it can read and clear manufacturer-specific codes. The listing is clear on one limit: it reads and clears codes only, and it is not for resetting systems beyond that. Reading a code is a starting point; it tells you where to look, not always which part has failed.
Live data, performance tests and trip analysis
Live data streams show values such as engine load, RPM, fuel trims, mass airflow, oxygen sensor readings and misfire counters. In practice, watching how those numbers move is how many mechanics narrow down a problem.
The brand also lists a performance test that measures 0-100 km/h acceleration time, maximum speed, engine load and coolant temperature, plus trip analysis covering average speed and average fuel consumption. A customizable dashboard (Smart Dash) can display the readings you care about.
Oil reset, DTC lookup and the app
Many cars have an oil-life indicator that needs resetting after a service. XTOOL lists an oil reset function so this can be done at home. A built-in DTC lookup explains what a code generally means in plain language.
The scanner uses XTOOL's own app for iOS, iPadOS and Android. XTOOL says the app and updates are free for life, with no subscription, and that the app offers 11 languages. The brand also lists a two-year warranty.
Which vehicles it works with
XTOOL states that the scanner works with OBD-II compliant, 12-volt vehicles: American makes since 1996, European since 2000 and Asian since 2008. That covers cars, light trucks, SUVs and minivans, including petrol, diesel and hybrid models. It is not for pure electric vehicles.
Who it suits
It suits drivers who want to understand a warning light before visiting a garage, and DIY owners who do their own maintenance. Because it is wireless and small, it can stay in a glovebox.
What to check before you buy
- Your vehicle: confirm that it has a 12-volt OBD-II port and falls within the model years XTOOL lists. Pure electric cars are excluded.
- Your phone or tablet: check which operating system versions the app supports.
- What you need to reset: the listing says it reads and clears codes only; check that the service functions you want are included.
- Wireless use: the adapter needs a stable connection to your phone while driving, so check the manual for pairing steps.
- Safe use: do not let a phone distract you at the wheel, and follow the vehicle manual when clearing codes. A warning light can signal a real fault.
The short version
- A wireless OBD2 scanner that works with an app on iPhone, iPad and Android.
- Reads and clears codes, with freeze frame, live data and I/M readiness.
- All-system scan across engine, powertrain, steering and brake, airbag and ABS.
- Oil reset, performance test, trip analysis and DTC lookup.
- For 12-volt OBD-II vehicles, not pure electric ones; lifetime app updates and a two-year warranty, as XTOOL states.
