The TOPDON TopScan Pro is a small Bluetooth adapter that plugs into a car's OBD2 port and turns an iPhone or Android phone into a diagnostic scanner. Beyond reading and clearing fault codes, it runs active tests on components and carries out service resets. Here's what those functions mean, and what to check about your vehicle and the software terms.
What an OBD2 scanner does
OBD2 is the standard diagnostic system on cars and light trucks sold in the US from the 1996 model year onwards. The port is usually under the dashboard, near the steering column, and the TopScan Pro's app includes a guide to its location. When a system detects a problem, it records a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), often with a warning light on the dash.
Many basic code readers only talk to the engine. The TopScan Pro scans all vehicle systems, including the engine, transmission, ABS and airbags. It reads and clears codes, shows live data from sensors as the car runs, and creates a vehicle health report. Clearing a code turns the warning off, but it doesn't fix the cause: if the fault is still there, the code comes back.
Active tests from your phone
Bidirectional control means the scanner can send commands as well as read data. From your phone, you can run active tests on parts such as fuel injectors, cooling fans, coolant pumps, windows, doors, headlights, wipers and A/C clutches. If a part responds to a direct command, it and its wiring are likely working, which points the search elsewhere; if it doesn't, you've narrowed down where to look. That helps confirm a fault before taking anything apart.
13+ service functions
More than 13 service functions are included. In general terms:
- Oil reset: clears the service reminder after an oil change.
- EPB: retracts an electronic parking brake so the rear pads can be changed.
- BMS: registers a new battery with the car's battery management system.
- SAS: calibrates the steering angle sensor, typically after alignment or steering work.
- DPF: starts a regeneration to clean a diesel particulate filter.
- Injector coding and throttle relearn: match new injectors, or a cleaned or replaced throttle body, to the engine computer.
Which functions work depends on the vehicle, and some procedures require specific conditions, so follow the app's prompts and the vehicle's service information.
Repair help and TopFix
TopFix, an AI assistant, draws on a repair database to suggest fixes and answer questions, and also offers one-click translation and a repair history. The app adds DTC repair guides, technical service bulletins (official notices from carmakers about known problems and fixes), and a warning light library. It works in 45 languages.
Coverage, apps and software terms
TOPDON lists coverage for more than 10,000 vehicle models with standard OBD2 ports, from 1996 onwards, and support for CAN-FD, a faster version of the CAN network that many newer vehicles use. Coverage varies by make, model and year, so check your vehicle first. The app is TopGuru Pro on iPhone and TopScan on Android.
According to the listing, core OBD2 diagnostics stay available for life: full-system code reading, I/M (emissions) readiness, engine inspection, performance tests and repair information. Advanced features, including bidirectional control, service functions, live data and code clearing, are included for the first year, as is unlimited use of TopFix. After the first year, you can renew a yearly subscription to the advanced features or keep using the core diagnostics. The scanner has a one-year warranty.
What to check before you buy
- Your vehicle: confirm coverage for your make, model and year, and which functions it supports.
- Your phone: an iPhone or Android phone with Bluetooth, running the TopGuru Pro or TopScan app.
- Software terms: which features you'll rely on after the first year.
- The job: follow the app's prompts and your vehicle's service information for active tests and resets.
