The TOPDON TopScan Pro is a small Bluetooth OBD2 scanner that plugs into a car's diagnostic port and talks to an app on your phone. It reads fault codes, shows live data and, according to TOPDON, performs 13 service resets. It is the upgraded version of the TopScan Lite, which TOPDON lists with 8 reset functions.
What an OBD2 scanner does
Most cars built in the last few decades have a standard diagnostic socket, usually under the dashboard. A scanner plugs in and asks the car's control units for trouble codes, which are short codes that point to a problem area. The TopScan Pro supports OBDII/EOBD protocols, which cover the common standards for petrol and diesel vehicles in North America and Europe. A code is a starting point for diagnosis, not a complete answer on its own.
Full-system diagnostics and live data
Basic code readers only look at the engine. TOPDON says the TopScan Pro reads all major systems, including engine, ABS, SRS (airbags) and transmission. Support differs by make, model and year, so check the vehicle coverage list before relying on it.
The Live Data function streams parameters such as engine readings while the car runs, which is useful for watching how a sensor behaves over time.
The 13 service resets
Service functions reset or recalibrate something after maintenance. TOPDON lists these, among others:
- oil reset;
- throttle adaptation;
- electronic parking brake (EPB) reset;
- DPF regeneration;
- ABS bleeding;
- airbag reset;
- injector coding.
Which of these your car accepts depends on the vehicle. Follow the manufacturer's service procedure for any work on brakes or airbags, and use a qualified technician if you are unsure.
Bi-directional control and FCA gateway access
Bi-directional control means the tool can send commands to the car, such as activating a component for testing, rather than only reading data. TOPDON also lists FCA Gateway Access, which is needed for protected functions on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat and related vehicles.
Bluetooth, apps and subscription
The scanner uses Bluetooth 5.0 with a stated range of up to 33 feet. It pairs through an app, TopScan on Android and TOPGURU on iOS, and TOPDON lists Android 7.0 and iOS 10.0 or later. The app supports 18 languages. TOPDON says there is no subscription for the first year, after which monthly, quarterly and yearly plans are offered. Check what the plan covers before you rely on advanced features.
Size
The device measures about 2.0 x 1.1 x 3.3 inches (5 x 2.8 x 8.4 cm), small enough to keep in a glovebox.
Who it suits
It suits home mechanics and drivers who want to read codes, check live data and do routine resets such as an oil service light, without carrying a handheld tool. Professionals needing deep coverage on a wide range of vehicles may want a dedicated workshop tool.
What to check before you buy

- Subscription terms: read what is included after the first year.
- Port access: find where your car's diagnostic port is and whether the device fits.
- Parked-car use: unplug it when not in use, as the manual advises.
