The TOPDON Phoenix XLink (model Phoenix XLink-US) is a professional-style vehicle diagnostic tablet. It reads and clears fault codes, performs active tests, runs maintenance resets and, according to TOPDON, handles ECU programming and online coding. It is aimed at workshops and experienced home mechanics rather than casual code reading.

Diagnostics across systems

TOPDON says the tool covers 168 vehicle brands and scans all available systems, reads and clears DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes), shows live data as graphs, allows data playback and gives detailed ECU information. It can generate diagnostic reports. It also offers 8-system high-speed simultaneous scanning, and topology mapping, which gives a visual map of the vehicle's control modules and how they connect, helping you see which modules are responding.

Bi-directional control

Bi-directional means the tool does more than listen. It can send commands to a vehicle's control units, such as switching a component on to test it. This is typically what separates a full diagnostic tool from a basic code reader. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's procedures and the tool's manual when using such functions.

ECU programming and coding

TOPDON describes cloud-based programming for BMW and Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including ECU matching and replacement, new ECU programming and software upgrades. Online coding is described as a way to unlock hidden features and customise settings. The brand advises backing up data before programming. Programming changes how a vehicle's modules operate, so it's wise to understand the procedure and keep the vehicle's power stable during the process. TOPDON says the built-in programming software removes the need for a separate VCI dongle.

Protocols and brand-specific support

  • CAN FD and DoIP: newer communication protocols that allow faster data transfer and broader compatibility with modern vehicles.
  • VAG guidance: step-by-step guided functions for Volkswagen Group models.
  • FCA AutoAuth: access to the secured gateway on Chrysler, Jeep, Alfa Romeo and Fiat models from 2017 onward.

Service functions

The tool lists 41 commonly used maintenance functions, including oil reset, brake reset, EPB, SAS, BMS, DPF, TPMS, ABS bleeding and throttle relearn. TOPDON also mentions ADAS calibration support, a battery tester and a thermal imager for spotting electrical hotspots. Check which of these need extra accessories or specific vehicle support.

Hardware and updates

The tablet has a 10.1-inch display, 128 GB of memory and a 12,600 mAh battery. The kit includes 19 connectors, and TOPDON offers technical support by remote access. Two years of software updates are included. The tool is wired and does not support Bluetooth; TOPDON says the wired design makes connection and communication more stable. The unit measures 7.8 x 2.0 x 11.5 inches.

What to check before you buy

  • Whether your vehicles' makes, models and years are supported for the functions you need.
  • Which features require online access, accounts or additional accessories.
  • What happens when the two years of updates end.
  • That you're comfortable with ECU programming and have a way to back up data first.
  • Whether a wired-only connection suits how you work.
  • Local rules about modifying vehicle software, emissions equipment and safety systems.

The short version

  • ECU programming and online coding for BMW and Mercedes-Benz, with CAN FD and DoIP support.
  • 41 service functions, topology mapping and 8-system fast scanning.
  • 128 GB memory, 12,600 mAh battery and 19 connectors, with two years of updates.
