The TOPDON AL600 (model AL600-US) is a handheld diagnostic scan tool that plugs into a car's OBD2 port. Besides the engine codes a basic code reader gives you, it also reads the ABS and airbag (SRS) systems and offers three common reset services. It is aimed at home mechanics who want to know why a warning light is on before they decide what to do about it.
What an OBD2 scanner actually does
Most cars sold since 1996 in North America have a standard OBD2 port, usually under the dashboard. A scanner reads the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) the car's computers log when something is out of range. TOPDON lists the usual OBD2 test modes: reading and clearing engine light codes, live data, freeze frame, I/M readiness status, O2 monitor, on-board monitor and EVAP tests, and vehicle information. I/M readiness is the status emissions inspections typically check, so it helps to know it before a smog test.
ABS and SRS systems, plus active tests
Many entry-level readers cover only the engine. The AL600 also reads and clears codes for the anti-lock brake (ABS) and airbag (SRS) systems, and shows live data as a graph. TOPDON also lists an Active Test function, which sends a command to a sensor, valve or solenoid so you can see whether it responds. That can narrow a fault down to one component rather than leaving you to guess. Clearing a code does not repair the cause, and brake and airbag faults deserve care: follow the vehicle's service manual or see a qualified technician.
Three reset services
- Oil light: resets the service reminder and mileage interval after an oil change.
- Battery management system (BMS): registers a new battery on cars that monitor charging, and clears the related low-battery message.
- Steering angle sensor: recalibrates the sensor so the car knows where straight ahead is, typically needed after certain alignment or steering work.
Whether your particular make and model supports each reset varies, so confirm coverage for your vehicle.
Built-in code library and ease of use
A DTC lookup library gives code definitions on the device, and a help function points to diagnostic tips, so you don't have to search a separate database. The body has rubber grips around the edges against drops, three shortcut keys (including one-key read/clear of codes and a smoke-status check), and a three-colour LED that shows test results at a glance. The menu has eight languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese and Japanese.
Updates and support
TOPDON offers lifetime updates, with the note that updating is supported on Windows only. It also lists a one-year warranty and phone and email support. The unit measures about 10.2 x 8.2 x 7.0 inches as packaged.
Who it suits
It suits drivers who do some of their own maintenance, owners of older and newer cars who want to read more than engine codes, and anyone who prefers to arrive at a garage knowing what a warning light refers to.
What to check before you buy
- Vehicle coverage: confirm that your make, model and year are supported for ABS, SRS and each reset service.
- Port location: make sure you can reach the OBD2 port in your car.
- Update computer: updates need a Windows PC.
- Your skill level: reading a code is easy; acting on brake or airbag faults is not always a home job.
- What's in the box: check which cable and accessories are included.
