TOPDON AL500B OBD2 Scanner and Battery Tester: features, specs and who it suits
The TOPDON AL500B combines an OBD2 code reader with a 12V battery tester plus cranking and charging tests. Here is what it reads, what the tests mean and what to check.

The TOPDON AL500B is a handheld 2-in-1 tool: an OBD2 code reader for the engine's diagnostic data, and a battery tester for the 12V battery and charging system. It is aimed at car owners who want to know why a warning light is on, or whether a battery is about to let them down, before a trip to the garage.
What the OBD2 side reads
OBD2 is the standard diagnostic port found on most cars built since the mid-1990s. TOPDON says the AL500B supports the full set of OBD2 functions on most models released after 1996. It can read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), show freeze frame data (a snapshot of conditions when a fault was logged) and look up the ECU version.
A built-in DTC library shows what each code means, so you see a description rather than just a number. A one-touch I/M readiness button gives a quick view of the emissions monitors, which is the status many inspection programmes look at. Live data is shown as a stream and as a waveform graph, which makes changes over time easier to spot than a column of numbers.
What the battery tests tell you
For 12V batteries, the battery test reports health, current, charge, voltage, internal resistance and rated CCA (cold cranking amps). CCA describes a battery's ability to start an engine in cold weather. Internal resistance typically rises as a battery ages, which is why it is a useful indicator.
Two further tests work for both 12V and 24V systems:
- Cranking test: shows the cranking voltage and how long the engine takes to start. A big voltage drop while cranking often points to a weak battery or a poor connection.
- Charging test: shows the charging system's voltage output with the engine running, which helps tell a battery problem from an alternator problem.
TOPDON's idea is simple: test the battery before it leaves you stuck, rather than after.
Compatibility and languages
The brand says the AL500B covers full OBDII diagnosis for more than 50 car brands and supports seven languages. It also asks buyers to contact the company about compatibility before purchase, which is sensible if your vehicle is unusual. An OBD2 reader of this kind reads generic engine and emissions data; it is not the same as a dealer-level tool for every system in the car.
Updates and reports
The unit has a mini USB port. TOPDON says it can be updated free of charge from a computer, and that a diagnostic or battery test report can be printed when it is connected to a computer with a printer. Support is offered by email and by phone during business hours, according to the listing.
Size
It measures about 7.3 x 3.7 x 1.3 inches (roughly 18.5 x 9.4 x 3.3 cm), so it fits in a glovebox or tool drawer.
Who it suits
It suits home mechanics, owners of older vehicles with a battery that may be due for replacement, and anyone who wants to read codes themselves before deciding on a repair. A reader like this tells you what the car has logged; deciding what to do about it still takes judgement or a qualified mechanic.
What to check before you buy
- Your vehicle's age and type: confirm it uses the OBD2 port and is covered, and ask the brand if unsure.
- Battery voltage: the tests cover 12V and 24V systems, so check which your vehicle has.
- What you need to read: this tool covers OBD2 engine and emissions data, not every control module.
- Computer access: updates and printed reports need a computer with a mini USB connection.
- Follow the manual for connecting to the vehicle and the battery.
