The Renogy 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM battery (model RNG-BATT-AGM12-100-US) is a sealed lead-acid battery built to supply steady power over long periods. It is aimed at RVs, camping setups, cabins, boats and off-grid systems, where a starter battery would wear out quickly. Here is what the specs mean and what to check before building a system around it.

What AGM and "deep cycle" mean

AGM stands for absorbent glass mat. The electrolyte is held in glass-fibre mats between the plates instead of sloshing freely as a liquid. The battery is sealed, so it is described as maintenance-free: no topping up with water. Renogy says this design avoids the internal troubleshooting some other chemistries need.

Deep cycle means the battery is designed to be discharged substantially and recharged repeatedly, unlike a car starter battery that delivers a short burst of current. As a general rule, lead-acid batteries last longer if they aren't regularly drained to very low levels, so the usable capacity is often less than the full 100Ah.

Capacity in practice

A 12V 100Ah battery stores roughly 1,200 watt-hours (12 volts x 100 amp-hours) in theory. That is an upper bound: a typical user will draw only part of it to protect the battery's lifespan. A 60-watt load, for instance, would draw about 5 amps, so the battery could run it for several hours before it is drained.

Discharge current and what it can run

Renogy rates the maximum discharge current at 1100A for 5 seconds, which describes how much surge it can supply briefly. The brand says it can power most home appliances, including a fridge, microwave, coffee maker and laptop. Check each appliance's wattage, because a microwave or coffee maker pulls a lot of current and may need an inverter sized for it.

Temperature range and storage

The upgraded electrolyte is rated for discharge performance from -4 to 140°F (-20 to 60°C). Charging typically has narrower temperature limits, so check the manual. Self-discharge is listed as below 3% per month at 77°F (25°C), meaning the battery holds its charge fairly well during storage, though lead-acid batteries still benefit from periodic top-ups.

Connecting several batteries

Renogy says the battery supports series connections with no stated limit and parallel connections of up to four. Series raises voltage (two 12V batteries give 24V), while parallel raises capacity at the same voltage. Use matched batteries of the same age and follow the manual and local codes for cabling and fusing.

Size and weight

It measures 13.1 x 6.9 x 8.6 inches (about 33 x 17.5 x 22 cm) and weighs 63.9 lb (about 29 kg). Weight is a real consideration in a vehicle or boat.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a familiar, sealed lead-acid battery for an RV house bank, a small cabin, a boat's accessory circuit or a solar-charged setup, and who are comfortable with the weight.

What to check before you buy

  • Space and weight: confirm the battery tray or compartment fits the dimensions and the 63.9 lb weight.
  • Your loads: add up the watts of what you will run and how many hours.
  • Charger and controller: make sure they have an AGM charging profile.
  • Wiring: use cable and fuses rated for the current, per the manual.
  • Mounting position and ventilation: follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The short version

  • A sealed, maintenance-free 12V 100Ah AGM deep cycle battery.
  • Rated at 1100A maximum discharge for 5 seconds; below 3% monthly self-discharge.
  • Discharge rated from -4 to 140°F (-20 to 60°C).
  • Series connections have no stated limit; parallel up to four.
  • About 63.9 lb, so plan the mounting carefully.
