The Povasee A40 is a portable lithium jump starter for 12V vehicles. It can start an engine with a flat battery without a second car, and it doubles as a USB power bank and torch. Here is what its listed specs mean and what to check before relying on one.

What 5,000A peak means

Povasee rates the A40 at 5,000 amps peak and says it can start gasoline engines and diesels up to 10 litres. Peak current is a brief maximum figure, and it is not the same as the sustained current delivered to a starter motor, so use it as a guide to the unit's class rather than a promise for every engine. Larger engines, cold weather and a deeply discharged battery all ask for more from the pack.

The listing says the A40 can manage up to 60 jump starts on a single charge, which depends on conditions. It also lists use with trucks, motorcycles, boats, RVs, tractors, ATVs, UTVs and lawnmowers, as long as they are 12V.

The RST button for very low batteries

Many jump starters refuse to work when the vehicle battery is almost empty, because they cannot detect it. Povasee says that if the battery is below 9V, pressing the "RST" button helps the engine restart. Check the manual for the exact steps before using this function.

The 3-inch display

Instead of a few indicator lights, the A40 has a 3-inch screen that Povasee says shows remaining power and working status. This is helpful in the dark or when stressed, because you can see the charge level before you reach the car.

Power bank and light

The unit also works as a power bank, with 88.8Wh of capacity and two USB output ports. One port supports QC 3.0 fast charging, which Povasee says is 75% faster than a standard charger. The built-in 600-lumen LED light has three modes: flashlight, strobe and SOS. Povasee suggests the strobe works as a warning beacon at the roadside.

Protections and temperature range

Povasee lists ten protection systems, including reverse polarity, reverse charge, over-discharge, short circuit, over-charge, over-current and over-heat protection, plus spark resistance. The operating range is -22°F to 140°F (about -30°C to 60°C). Protections reduce risk, but they do not replace care: connect the clamps in the order the manual describes.

What's in the box

You get the jump starter, smart jumper cables, a USB-A to USB-C cable (without an adapter), a carrying case, a user manual and a 36-month warranty. An AC adapter for charging is not included.

Size and who it suits

It measures about 8.3 x 3.5 x 1.6 inches (21 x 9 x 4 cm) and weighs 2.8 lb (about 1.3 kg), so it fits in a glovebox or boot. It suits drivers who want a backup for a dead battery, owners of seasonal vehicles such as boats and motorcycles, and anyone wanting a phone charger in the car.

What to check before you buy

  • Engine size: compare your engine type and displacement with the rated limits.
  • Voltage: the unit is for 12V systems only.
  • Charging: you need your own USB power adapter.
  • Storage: keep it charged, as the manual advises, and avoid leaving it in extreme heat.
  • Procedure: read the manual on clamp connection, and follow its safety guidance and your vehicle's handbook.
