The HPBS H5000 is a portable lithium jump starter that can start a vehicle with a flat battery without a second car. It also works as a power bank and a flashlight. Here is what its specs mean and how to choose and use a pack like this.
What 5000A peak means
HPBS rates the pack at 5000A peak and says it can start all petrol engines and diesel engines up to 10.0 L, in 12V vehicles. Peak amps is the highest short burst of current the pack can deliver, and it is usually a larger number than the sustained current an engine needs. It is useful as a comparison between packs, but engine size, battery condition and temperature matter more in practice. HPBS says the pack can start a vehicle in 1 to 2 seconds and make up to 80 jumps on a full charge.
Capacity and the power bank function
The internal battery is 88.8 Wh. HPBS says it can also charge phones, tablets, cameras and GPS units. Listed outputs are USB 5V at 2.4A and a USB quick-charge output at 5V, 9V and 12V, with an 18W USB-C input for recharging the pack. A USB cable is included without a wall adapter, so you will need your own.
Built-in flashlight
An LED flashlight has three modes: steady light, SOS and strobe. Useful on a dark roadside, it means you don't have to hunt for a separate torch.
Protection features
HPBS lists ten protections in the pack and its smart clamps, covering short circuit, over-temperature, over-charge and over-discharge, among others. Smart clamps typically won't deliver power until they are connected correctly, which helps against wrong polarity. Even so, follow the manual's connection order and keep the clamps off each other.
Display and standby
A 3.0-inch LCD shows the pack's status so you needn't interpret a few indicator lights. HPBS says a fully charged pack can hold its charge for about 24 months in standby. In practice, lithium packs lose charge over time, so check and top it up now and then, and keep it away from heat in a parked car.
Operating temperature
HPBS gives a working range of -4°F to 140°F (about -20°C to 60°C). Cold reduces both car and pack performance, so a pack that is well charged helps in winter.
Size and what's in the box
It weighs about 1.5 lb (0.7 kg) and measures about 8.1 x 3.5 x 1.6 inches, small enough for a glovebox. The box contains the jump starter, smart jumper cables, a USB cable (no adapter), a cigarette-lighter cable, an EVA storage case and a manual. HPBS gives a 2-year quality assurance.
Who it suits
It suits drivers of cars, SUVs, light trucks and many boats, mowers or tractors whose batteries are 12V, and anyone who wants a self-reliant roadside tool. Check whether your vehicle, particularly a large diesel, is within what the maker lists.
What to check before you buy
- Voltage: the pack is for 12V systems only.
- Engine size: confirm your engine fits HPBS's listed limits.
- Vehicle manual: look for its guidance on jump-starting, especially for hybrids and electric vehicles.
- Charging: note the charge time and keep a USB wall adapter handy.
- Storage: don't leave it in extreme heat or cold for long.
- Travel: check airline rules, as lithium packs are often restricted in luggage.
