The AstroAI S8 Ultra Max is a portable lithium jump starter and power bank in one. It can start a vehicle with a flat 12V battery without a second car, and its ports can also charge phones, laptops and other devices. AstroAI says it is powerful enough for gas engines and diesels up to 12 litres, as well as 12V motorcycles, cars, SUVs and pickups.

What 6000A peak means

The 6000A figure is the peak current, a momentary maximum. It isn't what the unit delivers continuously, and it's a different measure from what an engine needs to turn over, which depends on its size, temperature and condition. AstroAI also describes a Boost button for fully depleted batteries. In general, a larger engine, a diesel or cold weather calls for a stronger starter.

Battery capacity

The pack is 27,000 mAh (99.9 Wh). The Wh figure is the more useful number for comparison, and it's also the size airlines often use as a carry-on limit, so check your airline's rules for lithium batteries when travelling.

Six ports

AstroAI lists these outputs:

  • 15V 10A DC output, up to 150W;
  • USB-A at 5V 2.4A;
  • USB-A with Quick Charge 3.0 (5V, 9V, 12V);
  • USB-C in/out at 100W;
  • a cigarette lighter output at 15V 10A.

That lets it charge a laptop over USB-C or run small DC devices, as well as jump a car. The USB-C port also recharges the unit itself.

Charging and accessories

With the included 100W USB charger, AstroAI says it charges from 0 to 100% in about 1.2 hours. The box contains a USB-A to USB-C cord, a USB-C to USB-C cord (usable for 60W charging), a cigarette lighter adapter, an 8AWG smart clamp set and a storage bag.

Screen and protections

A 3.2-inch screen is designed to stay readable in direct sunlight. It shows charge or discharge power, battery percentage, boost mode, reverse connection warnings and error codes. AstroAI lists ten protections: short circuit, overcurrent, overdischarge, overcharge, reverse polarity, reverse connection, overvoltage, overload, low and high temperature, and spark resistance. Always connect the clamps in the order the manual shows, and follow its safety instructions.

Body and light

The shell is ABS, PVC and silicone, which AstroAI says withstands drops and dust. The unit measures about 8.1 x 3.6 x 3.2 inches (20.6 x 9.1 x 8.1 cm) and weighs 2.4 lb (about 1.1 kg). A three-mode flashlight offers steady light, strobe and SOS.

Who it suits

It suits drivers who want a self-contained way to restart a flat battery, including owners of larger engines, and anyone who wants a power bank in the glovebox.

What to check before you buy

  • Engine and voltage: confirm it's a 12V system and that your engine size is within the stated range.
  • Condition: keep the pack charged and keep it as the manual describes, as extreme temperatures affect lithium batteries.
  • Clamps: check the cable length reaches your battery terminals.
  • Charging: note the charger needed for the 100W rate.
  • Local rules: follow the manual and any airline limits.

  • Six output ports, including 100W USB-C in/out.
  • 3.2-inch screen, ten protections and a three-mode flashlight.
  • Includes a charger, cables, clamps and a storage bag.
